Scientists from the University of Sussex have recorded blood oxygen levels in the hippocampus and provided experimental proof as to why the brain’s “memory centre,” is vulnerable to damage and degeneration, a precursor to Alzheimer’s disease.

Physical exercise enhances hippocampal or neural plasticity and the creation of new neurons (neurogenesis)..
It is also a stress management that reduces the neurotoxic effects of cortisol on the hippocampus. Mental exercises, such as memorising a poem or a list of words or numbers, reading, writing, or retrieving vocabulary, all activate the hippocampus.

So why is this good?
Studies suggest that increasing blood flow in the hippocampus might be really effective at preventing damage and memory loss.
